The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Russian consists of two externally-examined papers assessing listening, reading and writing and a non-examined speaking assessment. The speaking assessment is externally set and conducted by a teacher-examiner.

This paper draws on vocabulary and structures across all four themes. Themes are based on Russian society and culture.

When is the exam? Tuesday 25 May 2027 — afternoon
This paper draws on the study of two discrete Russian works: either two literary texts or one literary text and one film. The literary texts listed include a range of novels, plays and a series of short stories. All of the films are feature length.

Section B - Written response to literary texts (50 marks): Students select one question from a choice of two for each of their chosen literary text(s). If a student answers questions on two literary texts then they do not complete Section C.

Students will be assessed on their ability to use a range of language accurately, communicate and interact effectively, summarise and analyse findings from written sources relating to their research subject, and show knowledge and understanding about Russian-speaking culture and society.

Task 1 - discussion on a theme (30 marks): Students discuss one theme from the specification based on a stimulus containing two different statements.

Task 2, Part 1 - independent research presentation (12 marks): Students present a summary of at least two of the written sources they have used for their research and give a personal response to what they have read.

Task 2, Part 2 - discussion on independent research (30 marks): Students answer questions on their presentation and then have a wider discussion on their research.

At Volna, students will engage in the study and analysis of one literary text and one film, fully preparing them for the Writing Exam (Paper 2). Students will delve into the intricacies of the characters, exploring their personalities, characteristics, emotions, and the underlying themes of the literary work. Our teachers will guide students on the effective structure and techniques required to write high-scoring essays.

The Independent Research Project is a component of the Speaking Exam where students are given the opportunity to conduct their own research on a topic of their choice within the field of Russian language, literature, culture, or society.
The IRP allows students to delve deeper into a particular area of interest and develop their research, critical thinking, and analytical skills. It provides students with the chance to demonstrate their ability to work independently, engage with academic sources, and verbally present their findings in a coherent and cohesive manner.
Independent research may be based on one of the four themes or on the student's own subject of interest. Any research topic can be chosen as long as it is related to the Russian-speaking society and culture. Students will have to thoroughly analyse their chosen research, find and use relevant statistics, and form an opinion based on all they have learned.
In Task 2 of the Paper 3 speaking assessment, students will deliver a short presentation on their research project. The examiner will ask questions about the presentation, followed by a wider discussion on the research project. The independent research project must not be based on a literary work or film studied for Paper 2.
In every lesson, students actively practise their speaking skills and will be provided with the opportunity to participate in a speaking mock exam. This mock exam serves as a valuable tool to evaluate the student's grasp and comprehension of their selected research topic. Students will receive constructive feedback on the quality of their research and the effectiveness of their discussion responses, enabling them to refine their communication abilities and enhance their overall exam performance.
Multiple Locations to Take Your Exams
Whether you attend school or college, or are home-schooled, you always have the opportunity to register as a Russian A-Level candidate. Below, you'll find three convenient options for selecting your exam location. Our teachers are readily available to provide assistance and support throughout the entire exam registration process, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience.
Taking your exams at your school or college is highly recommended as it offers convenience and affordability. To begin the registration process, reach out to your school/college and inquire about enrolling as a candidate for the Pearson Edexcel Russian A Level (9RU0). We suggest contacting the Head of Languages or the Exams Officer as they can guide you through the entire process.
Opting for exams at your school or college provides several advantages. Firstly, all of your A Level exams will be conducted in one familiar location, removing the need to travel to an external exam center. In case there is a scheduling conflict between a Russian exam and another A Level exam, your school can make necessary adjustments. Furthermore, you will only be required to pay the registration fee, which is currently £148.55.
Please note that for the Speaking Exam, it is necessary to have a Russian-speaking member of staff to conduct the assessment. We understand that not all schools or colleges have a Russian-speaking staff member available to do this. In such cases, the alternative option would be to take your exams at an external exam centre. However, if your school or college is located in London or its surrounding counties, our A Level teachers can come in to conduct the assessment. We offer this service at a fee of £50, excluding travel expenses. Feel free to contact us if you would like us to arrange this for you!
There are many exam centres across the UK that are registered with Edexcel and offer Russian A Level exams. Find a private-candidate exam centre using the JCQ tool.
It is important to be aware that exam registration fees can be quite costly. Each exam centre sets its own pricing, and it is not uncommon for centres to charge £200 or more for a single exam. However, we are here to support you in finding a local and cost-effective exam centre.
Receive Feedback on Past Papers with Our Mock Exams
We offer two A-Level Russian mock exams each school year, one in the Autumn Term and another in the Spring Term. While participation in these mock exams is optional, we strongly recommend them as they provide invaluable preparation and insight for students. Our mocks are conducted online via Zoom, providing students with an authentic exam environment to simulate exam conditions as closely as possible.
Mock exams give students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the structure of each exam. By participating, students gain a clear understanding of what to expect during their actual exams and how to effectively manage their time.
The cost of our mock exams is £60, which covers invigilation and marking. Students will complete mock assessments covering Paper 1 and Paper 3 under strict exam conditions.
Following the completion and marking of the exam papers, students will receive valuable feedback highlighting areas that require further attention. In our virtual classroom, our teachers will use the mock exam results to assess each student's individual performance and provide specific areas for improvement.
