 - Children's Group Classes -

For children who are already familiar with Russian (i.e. who have previously lived in Russia or who speak Russian at home), we recommend joining one of our eight Class Groups. These classes provide steady and structured progression for children aged 2.5 to 15. At the end of each academic year, all students will be fully prepared to transition to the next group seamlessly. Here are the Class Groups in order of Russian language proficiency:

  1. Junior Group (Младшая группа)

  2. Middle Group (Средняя группа)

  3. Upper Group (Старшая группа)

  4. Class Zero (Нулевой класс)

  5. Class One (Первый класс)

  6. Class Two (Второй класс)

  7. Class Three (Третий класс)

  8. Class Four (Четвертый класс)

Students finishing Class Four will be ready to progress to our GCSE Class the following academic year. Click here to find out more about our GCSE and A Level classes.

Each Class Group has two 1-hour Skype lessons per week (not including half terms and holidays). One lesson is after school during the week and the other is on the weekend. If your child is not available during the time of one of our classes, you could always have a private one-to-one class at the day and time that works for you and our teacher. You can find all class times in the Group Class Times and Lesson Structure section below.

All Group Classes are £10 per hour! See our Prices and Payment section for full details.

- Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL) Classes -

For children aged 4-15 who have very limited knowledge of the Russian language (i.e. little to no experience in speaking, reading and writing in Russian), we recommend joining our Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL) Classes. We currently have two RFL Classes – one for children aged 4-8 and one for children aged 9-15. These classes will provide students the best foundation to start learning Russian. The end goal of this class is to improve reading, writing and speaking skills to a significant level that will allow clear progression onto our GCSE Class.

Both RFL Classes have two 1-hour Skype lessons during the week (not including half terms and holidays). If your child is not available during the time of one of our classes, you could always have a private one-to-one class at the day and time that works for you and our teacher. You can find all class times in the RFL Class Times and Lesson Structure section.

RFL Group Classes are only £10 per hour! See our Prices and Payment section for full details.

 - Children's Private Lessons -

We also offer private one-to-one classes for children of any age, where your child will learn on their own with one of our teachers. This option is best for children who are not available during the time of their Group Class, or children who only need to learn a single, specific aspect of the Russian language (i.e. only reading, writing or speaking practice). We recommend that children in private classes follow our structured curriculum, however, if you have a specific goal in mind, we can solely focus on that instead.

Private classes are only £25 per hour! See our Prices and Payment section for full details.

 - Group Class Times and Lesson Structure -

We wish to make studying Russian accessible to every child, as learning a new language is an extremely valuable advantage - both academically and socially. We believe that our prices are much more affordable than any other online learning service, especially when considering the quality of teaching your child will receive.

Group Classes and RFL Classes are £10 per hour.

Private Classes are £25 per hour.

We offer a full refund for all future lessons if you decide to stop learning with us. Please email info@volnaschool.com to request a refund.

Payment is done by invoice which is a very quick process that you can easily do online. After your free week of lessons, we will ask you to pay for the remaining term lessons. You are welcome to split the payment into smaller sums if you wish (e.g. you can pay for a single month and not the full school term).

Group Classes (not including RFL Classes) have a £30 annual fee for all study materials for the full academic year. This will be posted to your home address. Study materials for RFL classes will be sent to you by email, free of charge.

In terms of payment, you only need to pay for the lessons that your child attends. Authorised absences (if you inform us at least 2 days in advance) are allowed and will be refunded to you in full at the end of each school term.

Junior Group

(Младшая группа)

The Junior Group is designed for our youngest students between the ages of 2.5 and 4.

Lesson 1: Reading and Writing

Fridays from 17:00 to 18:00

Memorising sounds and understanding the meaning of each word is a crucial period in children’s speech development. It is the first words that form the basis from which the first sentences arise, and the child will begin to learn the rules of the Russian language using these words as examples.

The Junior Group introduces children to the foundations of speech throughout the academic year. Students will acquire the skill of distinguishing different sounds of letters without relying on the alphabet. At this stage, students will develop their ability to process visual information, which is necessary in the future once they begin writing letters.

Students will be encouraged to colour in and outline pictures and letters related to the topic of the lesson. They will then learn to draw around letters with the help of dotted lines, and eventually draw the letters by themselves.

Lesson 2: Development of Speech

Sundays from 14:30 to 15:30

Middle Group

(Средняя группа

The Middle Group is the best choice for most children between the ages of 4 and 6.

Lesson 1: Reading and Writing

Wednesdays from 17:00 to 18:00

In this group our teachers will pay close attention to each child's individual level of Russian language knowledge.

Throughout the school year, the main purpose of reading and writing lessons is to teach your child how to correctly identify letters and begin reading. To do this, with the help of special exercises, students not only identify the letters, but also determine their location in relation to other letters. Thus, the child learns to read correctly by "scanning" each syllable and the order of each word, without forgetting to pronounce each letter.

In our speech development lessons, children will increase their range of vocabulary while considering the rules of word formation and word combinations. The correct construction of spoken language is the main goal of this year of study.

Lesson 2: Development of Speech

Sundays from 15:40 to 16:40

Upper Group

(Старшая группа)

The Upper Group applies to many children of different ages, starting from the age of 5.

Lesson 1: Reading and Writing

Mondays from 17:00 to 18:00

In the Upper Group, particular attention is paid to reading the syllables of simple words correctly, as well as words with a more complex structure. Throughout the reading and writing lessons, children will learn to use intonation to distinguish between stressed and unstressed syllables. They will also learn about combining letters into words, as well as the difference between capital and lowercase letters.

From the start of the academic year, children will improve their ability to read whole words, from simple to complex, while understanding the meaning of each word that is read. They will often practice the spelling of words without mistakes.

As a result of increasing their range of vocabulary, children will learn to group words using crucial aspects of grammar such as gender, number and case. The gender, number and case of words will be taught for many of the common nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals. This is the most important foundation to the development of speech in the Russian language.

Lesson 2: Development of Speech

Sundays from 16:50 to 17:50

Class Zero

(Нулевой класс

Class Zero is for children who are somewhat familiar with the curriculum of the Upper Group (the previous group) but are not yet fully prepared to start Class One (the following group). This class will improve students’ written language and reading speed to be ready to begin Class One.

Lesson 1: Grammar and Speech (Part 1)

Tuesdays from 17:00 to 18:00

Class Zero students, who have previously studied Russian, learn from the textbook "Multi-Colored Azbuka." This curriculum is designed to bring all students to the same level at the end of the school year, so that they can all start Class One lessons the following year.

Both lessons combine reading, writing, grammar and speech into one lesson objective, giving students a broad understanding of all the basic concepts of the Russian language. Students will also begin to write in Cyrillic script, which is necessary for them to advance in writing.

One of the major principles underpinning the "Multi-Colored Azbuka" is the effective use of methods that teach Russian as a foreign language. This allows the teacher to tackle the errors of English-Russian language interference and explain to students the principles of many grammatical phenomena of the Russian language.

Lesson 2: Grammar and Speech (Part 2)

Thursday from 17:30 to 18:30

Each lesson has tasks that aid the development of fine motor skills, as well as some physical and musical exercises that give students a small and fun break from writing. Lessons also include the "Etiquette from Kotik", where children learn aspects of social interaction such as how to keep a conversation going and how to behave in different situations (at home, at school, etc.).

Class One

(Первый класс)

Starting from this class, we only take the student’s ability into account and not the student’s age. To learn most productively in this class, students need to able to read well, know how to write full sentences in Cyrillic script, and know how to speak correctly about each of the major topics previously studied.

Lesson 1: Russian Language

Mondays from 17:30 to 18:30

By learning about phonetics in more detail, students will know how to correctly pronounce the sounds in words, divide words into syllables, put stress on the appropriate syllables, and use the correct intonation when taking into account the punctuation marks within the sentence.

As the result of improved spelling, students will learn how to correctly write vowels and consonants in different parts of the word, as well as when to capitalise certain words. The difficulty of tasks is higher than in Class Zero as students will use a larger range of vocabulary.

Russian language lessons allow our students to read confidently and correctly, while understanding every word read. At the same time, students will learn to ask questions, create their own plans, and correctly write words, sentences and paragraphs that they have read without mistakes. Students will write sentences dictated by their teacher and learn how to correctly form a sentence when writing.

Lesson 2: Reading and Speaking

Fridays from 17:30 to 18:30

Grammar in Class One teaches students to divide a word by its composition (i.e. by its prefix, root, suffix and ending). Students will know how to identify different parts of speech such as nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs. They will master the skill of using the correct case and the proper conjugation of verbs.

In Reading and Speaking lessons, each student’s range of vocabulary will grow substantially. Each student will also learn how to correctly interpret words that have multiple meanings through the context of the sentence.

Class Two and Class Three

(Второй класс и Третий класс

Based on the level of success, understanding and application of the curriculum in Class One, students will progress into either Class Two or Class Three. Your teacher will determine which class is more appropriate in each individual case. The goals and tasks of both classes are very similar, but Class Three will use more advanced principles.

Lesson 1: Russian Language

Tuesdays from 16:00 to 17:00 (Class Two)

Thursdays from 18:30 to 19:30 (Class Three)

As a result of learning more about phonetics, students will know how to accentuate words in a sentence in a way that conforms to the sentence’s implied meaning.

In terms of spelling, students will learn the correct spelling of consonant pairs at the root of the word, how to spell words with an unverifiable vowel, and how to memorise and analyse the dictionary words used in the curriculum’s vocabulary.

Reading and Speaking lessons will help students differentiate between speech types that depend on the form of communication (e.g. a formal letter, newspaper article, email to a friend, formal spoken language), as well as the content of the text (narrative, descriptive or opinion-based). Students will analyse the text’s composition, make an essay plan, and define the main topics of the text.  A lot of lesson time is devoted for students to consider the text’s imagery, scenario and setting. This content will be interpreted both in speaking and in writing.

Class Two Calendar
Class Three Calendar

Lesson 2: Reading and Speaking

Sundays from 14:30 to 15:30 (Class Two)

Sundays from 16:50 to 17:50 (Class Three)

With grammar, students will learn to differentiate between simple and complex sentences, find the primary and secondary parts of a sentence and use the most appropriate forms of noun case endings. Students will study in detail the various types of nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs.

Class Four

(Четвертый класс

Class Four is the final class in our Children’s Curriculum. Students will build on what they have previously learned with increased complexity. Completing this class fully prepares students to begin studying for their GCSE exams.

If you would like to read more about our GCSE Classes click here.

Lesson 1: Russian Language

Wednesdays from 18:30 to 19:30

As the result of mastering phonetics, students will learn to form different types of speech for various categories of communication.

Class Four students will learn the following:

  • Connector vowels in complex words

  • Spelling vowels at the root of the word

  • Correctly spelling prefix vowels and consonants

  • Using soft signs at the end and in the middle of certain numerals

Other important learning objectives include knowing how to write different types of essays (narrative, descriptive and opinion-based), using a good sentence and paragraph structure, and correctly applying all types of punctuation marks.

Lesson 2: Reading and Speaking

Saturdays from 12:10 to 13:10

The grammar of this class sums up the work from Class One to Class Three. Study exercises will have an increased amount of difficulty which will accurately develop the previously studied material. Students will master:

  • All 6 cases of the Russian language

  • Skills of inclination (the declension of nouns)

  • Singular and plural adjectives

  • All types of verb conjugations

  • Homogenous words with correctly placed punctuation

  • Differentiating between direct and indirect speech

In reading lessons, students will vastly improve their technique and reading speed. Students will discover not only the facts and causal connections of the story, but also the emotions, thoughts and personality of each character.

 - RFL Class Times and Lesson Structure -

For children aged 4-15 who have limited knowledge of the Russian language (i.e. little to no experience in speaking, reading and writing in Russian), our Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL) classes will be the perfect foundation to start learning Russian.

Psychologists, sociologists and linguists of Moscow’s institutes (RUDN University & Pushkin’s Institute) have created our curriculum for RFL students. Immediately from the first lesson each student will progress and see results, which should increase their interest in learning Russian. Thus, one of the initial tasks of learning Russian as a foreign language is to form a motivational base - a keen interest in learning the language.

We currently have two RFL Classes – one for children aged 4-8, and one for students aged 9-14.

RFL Class for Children Aged 4-8

Русский как иностранный (РКИ)

Lesson 1: Thursdays from 17:30 to 18:30

Children in this class will focus on learning their first Russian sounds, words, phrases and sentences. We will use various practical methods to create and connect syllables, words and sentences. This will all be practiced both in speech and in writing.

It should be noted that the grammatical development of the child is inextricably linked to their range of vocabulary. We will continuously work on increasing each child’s range of vocabulary, which will therefore improve the rate at which they learn the rules of grammar.

After a few lessons, students will begin to read words and understand their meaning. They will quickly learn to write words dictated by the teacher with no spelling errors. The illustrated study materials for each lesson (both in paper and electronic forms) will allow your child to build on their cumulative lexical base. The vocabulary and correct construction of a sentence, both in speaking and writing, is the main point that the teacher of this class will draw attention to.

Lesson 2: Saturdays from 10:50 to 11:50

RFL Class for Students Aged 9-15

Русский как иностранный (РКИ)

Lesson 1: Tuesdays from 17:00 to 18:00

The main purpose of this class is to create a balanced bilingualism, that is, to provide students the development of a unique system of communicative tools in the framework of everyday life and education.

Lessons will focus on developing each student’s speaking, writing and reading ability, as well as improving their sociocultural competence, which is necessary to form a balanced bilingualism. Sociocultural competence is the ability to communicate in a language appropriately, situationally and culturally. It is the knowledge of customs, rules, beliefs and principles of the Russian society.

The format of each lesson is split into three distinct modules: Russian language, literacy and writing. The homework set in this class will be planned by the teacher individually, specific to each student.

Lesson 2: Thursdays from 16:30 to 17:30

The curriculum implements a communicatively oriented approach to language learning and speech development. For each stage of learning, specific goals and objectives are formulated by the teacher, which will determine the structure and content of the lesson. Each lesson clearly outlines the skills that students will acquire while working on every aspect of the Russian language (phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, word formation, reading and writing).
