Speaking more than one language will always be a valuable skill that will give you many advantages throughout your life. Learning Russian at Volna will not only provide you with more opportunities in the future, it will also improve multiple transferable skills and abilities.

Here are some of the most important benefits of learning Russian with us:

  • You can connect with a huge number of people. Russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world, used by hundreds of millions of people. It’s also the largest native language in Europe!

  • You will learn about the Russian-speaking countries and their interesting cultures. You will understand and be able to speak to lots of people when you go abroad to a Russian-speaking country.

  • Being a bilingual or a polyglot (knowing many languages) has numerous cognitive benefits, such as:

    • Better memory and brain capacity that stops mental aging and cognitive decline in later life

    • Improved problem-solving and critical thinking skills – this is exactly what universities and employers are looking for!

    • Enhanced concentration and attention-span, which is globally narrowing in recent years due to the huge number of information we are presented with on a daily basis

    • Stronger speaking and listening skills that will improve your social life

    • Better ability to multitask

    • Higher levels of creativity

  • You will be able to watch films, listen to songs and read books in Russian, and understand them too!

  • You will become more confident in yourself. Learning a foreign language will boost your self-esteem and develop your confidence. Once you start having conversations in Russian and receive positive feedback from native speakers, you will be motivated to learn more! This confidence boost will be visible to everyone around you, improving your quality of life substantially.

  • You will stand out from the rest when applying to universities. A Russian qualification not only increases your chances of receiving a university offer, it also displays that you are a keen learner. You will have a qualification in a language that is not taught in UK schools, sixth forms and colleges, which shows that you are willing to do additional independent learning in your spare time. University Admissions Officers don’t just look at your predicted grades, they will also take into account all the above skills that you will improve as a result of learning Russian. This is what makes Russian such a great subject to study – besides simply learning the language, you will acquire a whole range of transferable skills that will help you have the most successful future.

  • Every employer sees the value of knowing an additional language. Language skills are among the top eight skills required for all types of occupations, no matter the job role or skill level. Even if the job does not require you to speak Russian, it still shows the employer that you have a range of transferable skills. Learning Russian will also improve every aspect of your communication skills, which will greatly help you advance in your future career.

As you can see from all the above benefits, doing the Russian GCSE and A Level not only gives you an extra qualification, but it also prepares you for the future - university, employment and beyond.

  • Russian qualifications will open the door to many specialised professions that offer a high salary, some of which may be of interest to you. The demand for bilingual job applicants is rising exponentially, especially for these roles:

    • International Teachers and Private Tutors

    • Interpreters

    • Translators

    • Writers and Bloggers

    • International Sales and Business Managers

    • Foreign Correspondents and International Journalists

    • Liaison Officers (coordinating the activities of two different companies)

    • Field Researchers (market research, environmental research, etc.)

    • Foreign Service Officers (representing your country abroad)

    • Intelligence Operatives (for governmental agencies)

This is why you should choose to study with us at Volna - we provide professional tutoring to help you achieve top grades while learning a range of transferable life skills along the way!

Russian GCSE exams are on the 11th of June (Paper 1 and Paper 3) and the 1st of July (Paper 4) in 2021.

The Speaking Assessment (Paper 2) will be done in class and an endorsement will be provided by one of our teachers (this assessment does not count towards your final grade).

Russian A Level exams are on the 28th of May (Paper 1) and 11th of June (Paper 2) in 2021.

The Speaking Exam (Paper 3) can be taken at any time during the academic year.

There are 3 options to choose from when deciding where you want to take these exams:

Option 1: Take the exams at your school or college

This should always be the first choice for you as it’s the cheapest and most convenient. You should contact your school or college and ask them if you can enrol as a Russian GCSE/A Level candidate. Most schools and colleges will be happy to do this for you, and they will guide you through the whole process. The best people to contact are the school’s/college’s Head of Language and the Exams Officer.

Please note that as the Russian A Level has a speaking exam, you will need a Russian-speaking teacher to conduct the exam for you. As many schools and colleges do not have Russian-speaking staff, you may need to take this in one of the many exam centres around the UK (see the other two options below).

Option 2: Take the exams in High Wycombe (Buckinghamshire)

We are currently working together with the Buckinghamshire Adult Learning Centre to set up Russian GCSE and A Level exams in one of the local schools in High Wycombe. This option is best for students that live nearby and cannot arrange Russian exams through their own school or college.

We are aiming to make this as affordable as possible for you, and we will not charge you anything to take these exams. However, you will be charged by the exam centre for the course fees and the exam’s invigilators. We will do our best to make these costs as low as possible.

Once we set everything up, we will keep you updated with the full process.

Option 3: Take the exams in one of many exam centres around the UK

This is the only option left if both above options do not apply to you. There are a number of Edexcel-registered exam centres around the UK that conduct Russian exams. You can find a list of these exam centres on the Pearson (Edexcel) website by clicking here.

The main disadvantage of this option is that exam registration can be expensive. Each exam centre sets their own prices, and many centres charge as much as £100 or more for a single exam. We will be happy to help you find the best exam centre that is local to you and the most affordable.

This class is for the new Edexcel Russian A Level which started in September 2017. We will cover all the themes, topics, grammar and vocabulary that you will need to use in your exams. We will also go over a chosen film and book in a lot of detail, which you will need to write about in one of your exams.

Full qualification details can be found in the Russian A Level Specification, which you can view by clicking here.

A Level Group Lesson Times

Lesson 1: Thursdays from 17:00 to 18:00

Lesson 2: Thursdays from 18:20 to 19:20

*Additional class times will be posted in the future as some of our groups become full. We will keep you updated!

Younger and Older Students

Most students will be between 16-18 years old (in Year 12 and Year 13), but both younger and older students are welcome to join these classes too!

We highly recommend doing the Russian GCSE first if you haven’t already, as the Russian A Level is a big step up in complexity and difficulty. Sixth Form and College students could do their GCSE in Year 12 and then their A Level in Year 13. We will be happy to discuss this in more detail with you.

Exam Types

  • Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Translation

  • Paper 2: Written Response to Works and Translation

  • Paper 3: Speaking

Our Taking Your Exams section below on this page will tell you more about when and where you can take your A Level exams.

Mock Exams

Our A Level students will have the opportunity to take mock exams throughout the academic year. Mocks are great at estimating each student’s level of knowledge, as well as identifying areas that need improvement. They will be conducted online by our teachers in strict exam conditions. Mock exams are completely optional, but we believe that they will be a great benefit for every student. We will keep you updated with mock exam information once you begin studying with us.

Prices

A Level Group Classes cost £15 per 1-hour lesson and Private Classes cost £35 per 1-hour lesson.

Lesson 2: Wednesdays from 18:20 to 19:20

Group Two – Year 11 students (1 year)

Younger and Older Students

Most students will be between 14-16 years old, but both younger and older students are welcome to join these classes too!

For younger students, our teachers will be happy to assess their knowledge and pick the most appropriate class to join. If the student finds our GCSE Class a little too difficult, one of our Children’s Classes (e.g. Class Four) may be the best choice. Class Four is designed to fully prepare students for the GCSE Class the following year. You can find out more about all our Children’s Classes by clicking here.

Older students, and adults who wish to do this GCSE, are more than welcome to join our GCSE Group. In some cases, private lessons or one of our Adult Courses may be the most appropriate choice. We will be happy to discuss this with you to decide which class will bring you the best results.

Exam Types

  • Paper 1: Listening and Understanding in Russian

  • Paper 2: Speaking in Russian*

  • Paper 3: Reading and Understanding in Russian

  • Paper 4: Writing in Russian

*Please note that Speaking in Russian is no longer an exam. Starting from this academic year, students will only need to get a Speaking Endorsement from our GCSE teacher. This has three levels of attainment (Pass, Merit and Distinction) and it does not count towards your final grade. This assessment will be done some time during the spring and summer term. The assessment will consist of different speaking tasks that are designed by our teachers. Students will be made aware of the assessment’s format and will also be given time to prepare for it.

Our Taking Your Exams section below on this page will tell you more about when and where you can take your GCSE exams.
