Speaking more than one language will always be a valuable skill that will give you many advantages throughout your life. Learning Russian at Volna will not only provide you with more opportunities in the future, it will also increase and improve multiple transferable skills and abilities.

Here are some of the most important benefits of learning Russian with us:

  • You can connect with a huge number of people. Russian is the 8th most spoken language in the world, used by hundreds of millions of people. It’s also the largest native language in Europe!

  • You will learn about the Russian-speaking countries and their interesting cultures. You will understand and be able to speak to lots of people when you go abroad to a Russian-speaking country. As only about 5% of Russian-speaking people also speak English, making foreign friends will become much easier!

  • Being a bilingual or a polyglot (knowing many languages) has numerous cognitive benefits, such as:

    • Better memory and brain capacity that stops mental aging and cognitive decline

    • Improved problem-solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills

    • Enhanced concentration and attention-span

    • Stronger speaking and listening conversational skills

    • Better ability to multitask

    • Higher levels of creativity

  • You will be able to watch films, listen to songs and read books in Russian, and understand them too!

  • You will become more confident in yourself. Learning a foreign language will boost your self-esteem and develop your confidence. Once you start having conversations in Russian and receive positive feedback from native speakers, you will be motivated to learn more! Confidence and motivation are the keys to success, and besides learning Russian, you will also improve the quality of your social life.

  • Every employer sees the value of knowing an additional language. Language skills are among the top eight skills required for all types of occupations, no matter the job role or skill level. Even if the job does not require you to speak Russian, it still shows the employer that you are a keen learner. Learning Russian will also improve every aspect of your communication skills, which will greatly help you advance in your career.

This is why you should choose to study at Volna – we provide professional tutoring to help you achieve Russian fluency and a balanced bilingualism while learning a range of transferable skills along the way!

  • Fluency in Russian will open the door to many specialised professions that offer a high salary, some of which may be of interest to you. The demand for bilingual job applicants is rising exponentially, especially for these roles:

    • Private and International Teachers

    • Interpreters

    • Translators

    • Writers and Bloggers

    • International Sales and Business Managers

    • Foreign Correspondents and International Journalists

    • Foreign Service Officers (representing your country abroad)

    • Intelligence Operatives (for governmental agencies)

Our Beginners Course is specifically designed for English-speakers who want to learn the foundational principles of the Russian language in a short period of time (within one year).

Course Times

Our weekly group lessons are on Mondays from 19:00 to 20:00.

Please note that this does not include holidays and academic half terms.

Course Structure

The objective of the first few lessons is to learn common forms of greetings that will allow you to begin structuring various forms of dialogue. You will start to read short sentences in Russian and pronounce them correctly with the help of English transcriptions. Although Russian has a different alphabet, you will start reading relatively quickly, and you will begin to understand each word that is read.

We will then focus on building your range of vocabulary. We begin with vocabulary that shares similarities in pronunciation with their English counterparts. This will be applied to both reading dialogues and spoken conversations. We will then expand your vocabulary using groups of words from common themes, such as family, food and work.

Throughout this course you will learn to write each letter of the alphabet and then to form words and sentences. The writing element of our curriculum will be present in most of the lesson’s exercises. At the same time, you will learn key grammar concepts that are fundamental to understanding the meaning of what you hear and read about.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course you will know how to:

  • Read and fully understand basic forms of text

  • Conduct everyday dialogues and have meaningful conversations confidently

  • Use the correct pronunciation when reading and speaking

  • Write full sentences about the general topics that we will cover

  • Apply foundational grammar rules such as:

    • The case endings of nouns, adjectives and pronouns

    • The gender of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs

    • Singular and plural nouns and adjectives

    • Present, past and future tense verbs

    • Numbers and numerals

  • Progress to our Intermediate Adult Course.

Additional Exercises

We will set weekly optional exercises that you can complete before each next lesson. These will be directly applicable to the lesson’s content and they will help you to fully comprehend what has been studied.

Both the lesson study materials and the additional exercises will be sent to you by email or Skype, free of charge.

Private Lessons

We also offer private one-to-one lessons for adults of any level of Russian language knowledge. This option is best if you are not available during the time of our Beginner Group Class, or if you only wish to learn a single, specific aspect of the Russian language (i.e. only reading, writing or speaking practice). We recommend following our structured curriculum, however, if you have a specific goal in mind, we can solely focus on that instead.

Prices

The Beginner Group Course costs £10 per 1-hour lesson and Private Lessons cost £25 per 1-hour lesson.

For full details, have a look at our Prices and Payment section below.

The goal of this course is to learn to read, write and converse about common topics in Russian.

Our Intermediate Course is for adults who are already somewhat familiar with the Russian language, and can read, write and speak at a basic level.

Course Times

Our weekly group lessons are on Tuesdays from 19:00 to 20:00.

Please note that this does not include holidays and academic half terms.

Course Structure

We will aim to achieve reading fluency relatively early in this course. You will read about many interesting topics such as Russian cities, culture, history and nature. Once you become a fluent reader, we will pay close attention to your accent and the pronunciation of each Russian word. The focus will then be on increasing your reading speed and improving your ability to automatically comprehend what is read.

During the speaking element of each lesson you will talk about a wide range of topics and provide your opinions on them. You will talk about yourself and your family, where you live, the weather,  who your favourite writers and poets are, and much more. You will know how to order something and how to ask for directions when you visit a Russian-speaking country. We will aim to get you as close to speaking fluency as possible, but that may be limited by your range of vocabulary. Just like in our Beginner Course, you will steadily increase your vocabulary throughout the year.

As a result of advancing your reading and speaking abilities, your writing skills will substantially improve too. You will know how to write long and detailed sentences about all the topics you have read and spoken about. You will also apply old and new grammar rules in each of your writing exercises.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course you will know how to:

  • Use a large range of vocabulary when speaking and writing

  • Accurately read and understand more complex forms of text such as newspaper articles, fiction and non-fiction books, and some of the classical Russian literature

  • Understand and speak about the Russian culture and its many traditions

  • Have long and detailed conversations, ask and answer questions, and speak both formally and informally

  • Master pronunciation by using the correct intonation when speaking

  • Write various forms of text such as short essays, emails and letters to friends and relatives

  • Apply and expand your knowledge of the more complex aspects of Russian grammar, which includes:

    • Understanding and correctly applying all 6 Russian case endings along with their gender (masculine, feminine or neutral) and number (singular or plural)

    • Learning more intricate verb tenses and using their appropriate verb endings

    • Using various types of conjunctions and prepositions

    • Combining all the previously learned grammar principles to say and write perfect sentences in Russian
