Our Beginners Course is specifically designed for English-speakers who want to learn the foundational principles of the Russian language in a short period of time (within one year).
Course Times
Our weekly group lessons are on Mondays from 19:00 to 20:00.
Please note that this does not include holidays and academic half terms.
Course Structure
The objective of the first few lessons is to learn common forms of greetings that will allow you to begin structuring various forms of dialogue. You will start to read short sentences in Russian and pronounce them correctly with the help of English transcriptions. Although Russian has a different alphabet, you will start reading relatively quickly, and you will begin to understand each word that is read.
We will then focus on building your range of vocabulary. We begin with vocabulary that shares similarities in pronunciation with their English counterparts. This will be applied to both reading dialogues and spoken conversations. We will then expand your vocabulary using groups of words from common themes, such as family, food and work.
Throughout this course you will learn to write each letter of the alphabet and then to form words and sentences. The writing element of our curriculum will be present in most of the lesson’s exercises. At the same time, you will learn key grammar concepts that are fundamental to understanding the meaning of what you hear and read about.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course you will know how to:
-
Read and fully understand basic forms of text
-
Conduct everyday dialogues and have meaningful conversations confidently
-
Use the correct pronunciation when reading and speaking
-
Write full sentences about the general topics that we will cover
-
Apply foundational grammar rules such as:
-
The case endings of nouns, adjectives and pronouns
-
The gender of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs
-
Singular and plural nouns and adjectives
-
Present, past and future tense verbs
-
Numbers and numerals
-
-

Additional Exercises
We will set weekly optional exercises that you can complete before each next lesson. These will be directly applicable to the lesson’s content and they will help you to fully comprehend what has been studied.
Both the lesson study materials and the additional exercises will be sent to you by email or Skype, free of charge.
Private Lessons
We also offer private one-to-one lessons for adults of any level of Russian language knowledge. This option is best if you are not available during the time of our Beginner Group Class, or if you only wish to learn a single, specific aspect of the Russian language (i.e. only reading, writing or speaking practice). We recommend following our structured curriculum, however, if you have a specific goal in mind, we can solely focus on that instead.
Prices
The Beginner Group Course costs £10 per 1-hour lesson and Private Lessons cost £25 per 1-hour lesson.

The goal of this course is to learn to read, write and converse about common topics in Russian.

Our Intermediate Course is for adults who are already somewhat familiar with the Russian language, and can read, write and speak at a basic level.
Course Times
Our weekly group lessons are on Tuesdays from 19:00 to 20:00.
Please note that this does not include holidays and academic half terms.
Course Structure
We will aim to achieve reading fluency relatively early in this course. You will read about many interesting topics such as Russian cities, culture, history and nature. Once you become a fluent reader, we will pay close attention to your accent and the pronunciation of each Russian word. The focus will then be on increasing your reading speed and improving your ability to automatically comprehend what is read.
During the speaking element of each lesson you will talk about a wide range of topics and provide your opinions on them. You will talk about yourself and your family, where you live, the weather, who your favourite writers and poets are, and much more. You will know how to order something and how to ask for directions when you visit a Russian-speaking country. We will aim to get you as close to speaking fluency as possible, but that may be limited by your range of vocabulary. Just like in our Beginner Course, you will steadily increase your vocabulary throughout the year.
As a result of advancing your reading and speaking abilities, your writing skills will substantially improve too. You will know how to write long and detailed sentences about all the topics you have read and spoken about. You will also apply old and new grammar rules in each of your writing exercises.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course you will know how to:
-
Use a large range of vocabulary when speaking and writing
-
Accurately read and understand more complex forms of text such as newspaper articles, fiction and non-fiction books, and some of the classical Russian literature
-
Understand and speak about the Russian culture and its many traditions
-
Have long and detailed conversations, ask and answer questions, and speak both formally and informally
-
Master pronunciation by using the correct intonation when speaking
-
Write various forms of text such as short essays, emails and letters to friends and relatives
-
Apply and expand your knowledge of the more complex aspects of Russian grammar, which includes:
-
Understanding and correctly applying all 6 Russian case endings along with their gender (masculine, feminine or neutral) and number (singular or plural)
-
Learning more intricate verb tenses and using their appropriate verb endings
-
Using various types of conjunctions and prepositions
-
Combining all the previously learned grammar principles to say and write perfect sentences in Russian
-
Additional Exercises
We will set weekly optional exercises that you can complete before each next lesson. These will be directly applicable to the lesson’s content and they will help you to fully comprehend what has been studied.
